it is what it is. now obsolete. i’d buy the "missing manual" series if i were to buy another photoshop guide.
An excellent self-teach guideRating: 5
14 May 2008 @ amazon.co.uk
I bought this book some time ago and have only just got around to using it to try to get to grips with Photoshop CS2. I have tried other books and became somewhat disheartened that the instructions in the books didn’t match up with what was happening on-screen. Many of them missed out critical steps which is confusing and terribly time wasting.

This book is different. It is not a look-up reference book - it is an entire beginners course and needs to be used as such. It is clear, straight forward, starts off with interesting tasks and never lets one down. The colour images are terrific. More than anything, the keyboard tips which help you to make the most of the on-screen tools are excellent.

There is a lot to learn and remember, but the end-of-chapter revision questions are helpful and you can always go back and re-do a chapter. What is more, when you actually know what the book contains you can then use it as a reference - you might forget how to carry out a task but you will remember that the book has the answer so you can go back and look it up.

Once you have worked your way through the book you will almost certainly be able to work out how to use aspects of Photoshop that the book doesn’t cover. Photoshop is a massive application, and this book is an introduction, not an encylopaedia - unsurprisingly you will need to move on to a book covering the next level or work it out for yourself if you want to advance.

I love this book. Instead of regarding Photoshop as some impossible peak to conquer it has become my new best friend. The book facilitates learning, which so many books don’t.

I’ll be buying the series for the other bits of Creative Suite CS2 sitting on my PC.

As a complete novice to PhotoShop, this has been a great book for me. However, I am more interested in photo retouching using photoshop and so probably should have bought a book that focuses on that subject. Overall, though, it’s well written, informative, and easy to follow. I would recommend it for someone looking to gain all around knowledge of PhotoShop and its features.

This book was a required purchase as a supplement for a 4-week class I recently completed. Aside from a few minor typos, the book proves to be a helpful resource for me in and outside of the classroom. The examples are specific, and the word choice is straight-forward and easy to interpret. The CD of lesson materials has been expertly assembled. The lessons seem a bit "time consuming" as compared with other books... but the learnings are complete and easy to reference in the future. I intend to purchase other books from the "Classroom in a Book" series in the future.

I do not have Adobe Photoshop CS2, but am taking a class that follows the book. When I get the CD and install it, I will be able to do all the wonderful things to my photos that I am learning in the class. The book is very easy to follow. I also bought CS as it has more information in it.

12 Jan 2008 @ amazon.com
I bought this book thinking that learning Adobe software would be best with an Adobe book. What I discovered was the confusing instructions with Adobe books to get started with the lessons in both InDesign and Photoshop. The instructions for "Restoring Default Settings" or "Deleting Preferences to reset to their Original Default Values" and "Save your Current Color Settings" make zero sense to me, and to all in my family who have worked with Photoshop. We followed the instructions exactly on pages 4-7 only to hit a brick wall. When we’ve tried to open the first lesson which is called Lesson01/Project1 and 01End1.psd file, a dialog box comes up that says "Embedded Profile Mismatch". I called Adobe customer service and Technical support, spoke to 3 different people who could not answer the question, and they did not know what the Mismatch meant. How am I, or other "newbies" supposed to learn the program with such confusing terminology? Does anyone out there know the solution to this dilemma? Should we unistall the program and start over? This has been a very discouraging way to start learning the program. I wanted to get Adobe Certified, but I can’t even get thorugh Chapter One. Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks.

A great easy to use book for building Photoshop skillsRating: 5
01 Oct 2007 @ amazon.co.uk
Although familier with photo editing and graphics packages Photoshop has always appeared to me as this mythical nirvana used only by true digital photo and art buffs. So it was to this book that I initially turned to cut through the dizzying array of features and begin learning how to use the package. I was not dissapointed.

Coming with a CD with all the images you need for the lessons detailed within the book, you step through the fundamentals and several key features required for understanding the interface and getting excellent results simply and easily.

The book is not going to leave you as a Photoshop expert but it will give you the condfidence to work with the software and achieve remarkable things - mostly in the management and editing of photo’s. The lessons are very clear, well written and there are no typo’s that I noticed. Having tried out several other books you realise just how simply clever the presentation here is.

Having worked through all the tutorials this book now sits on the back of my desk and is a constant resource as I build on the skills learned to widen my use of Photoshop into art.

I must have I would say for any starter to intermediate user.

If you want to go back to your school days and have no interaction with the subject matter then this book is OK. But to work on your photos and learn what you want to do to them forget it. Way to structured, more suited to a textbook in a real class room where you can ask the teacher "how do I do this", forget it.

This book I imagine would be fine for someone who has never used Photoshop, and just wants to be walked through a tiny bit of the program. This was a required text for a graphics class on electronic imagery, and I found it to be frustratingly limiting, to say the least.

For instance, one project has you going into a folder to access the background, and other images for a collage. This is fine if that is what you want to do, but what if you want to find your own background, or see what the masking tools possibilities are? This book covers just a tiny portion of a drop in the proverbial bucket, and I found myself supplementing this text with SEVERAL other books, as it is a very "think inside the box" kind of text. There are a myriad of ways to do things within the Photoshop program,(one of the great joys, in my opinion, of working with Photoshop) and I don’t think this book, in any way, shape, or form, relays that to the reader.

If you are looking for a good introductory text for Photoshop, keep looking! This one is sadly lacking!

I am using this book for an on-line class on Photoshop CS2. Since it has a CD and lessons within the book, it is a helpful way to learn CS2. My one complaint, though, is that there are parts of lessons where the directions are a bit confusing and not always clear. After rereading and experimenting, though, you can usually figure it out. If a novice with Photoshop and CS2, I would also encourage using other Photoshop books, e.g. Colin Smith’s How to do Everything with Adobe Photoshop CS2, since they will include other clarifications regarding the topics involved in CS2.

This, as all the other Adobe Classroom in a Book Series is well thought out and executed. I picked this up when I got CS2 and it’s helped the transition a great deal. Anyone new or experienced with a previous Photoshop should benefit from this book. Now if I can just get all of my Adobe products to quit having to be activated every couple of hours. Uggghhhhh!

I bought this book for my class; it’s easy to follow, yet comprehensive. Each chapter (in form of a project) presents a set of tools that is necessary for that project step by step. You would learn so much more if you try different options such as setting "opacity" in different % to see what effect it has on the photo, etc.--don’t be afraid to mess up since you can always go back in "history" step you want to be.

I haven’t gotten through the whole book yet but I have found the first few chapters very easy to read and understand and the tutorials are a great way to gain an understanding of the tools and features photoshop gives designers.

One thing people say about photoshop is that there are many ways to go about accomplishing the same thing and this book groups similar tools together so you know about all (or at least several of) your options at the same time. This makes it much less frustrating when you go to apply what you have learned in your own projects.

I am using the book in conjunction with a class that meets twice a week but I honestly think that I could gain a decent, basic understanding of photoshop with this book alone.

Being a frequent user of Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator I wanted a book to tell me things I may not of yet discovered about the programmes. This book is really helpful, I have found out a lot of new tips and tricks and other ways around problems I have come accross previously with photoshop. The tutorials are generally very good although there are some that focus on very basic skills. If your not that hot on retouching images properly i’d buy this book as it has really helped me to learn and develop an undertanding of the healing brush, patch tool and even the magic erazer that i have never bothered to use before.

This book and CD is an excellent way of startin to learn the art of Photoshop without being in a classroom. The exercises that are in the book have the start and finish on the CD. The text in the book instructs you in a step by step way in a language anyone can understand. It goes from showing you the work area to masks and channels to correcting and retouching photographs and images to some advanced layering technique.
There is a reasonable chapter on basic image correction and another one on retouching and repairing the same with the exercises shown before and after on the CD. There is a chapter on layer basics and one on masks and channels. You get to know all about each tool in the work area.

I recently aquired Adobe’s Photoshop CS2 to add to my digital photography skills and learn how to repair and enhance my work. Was I shocked to open it up and find that there was little to nothing I could do with it. I needed help to get started. So I ordered Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book and haven’t been disappointed.
The book took me from nowhere to reasonably comfortable with Photoshop in a matter of days. The lessons assume that you are a beginner with Photoshop and cover the most used features in an eye opening and easy manner. The print is easy to read and the example photos are excelent. Included is a tutorial CD with lessons and examples that leave you with a new confidence as you move through the material. Each lesson covers a single topic and lessons become more complex as you progress. The topics are organized in such a way as to make the book useable as a reference and to allow the reader to jump ahead (after the first six or so lessons) to topics more interesting or relevant to the readers interest.

Although the volume is almost 500 pages and is easy to follow, it does not attempt to cover all features of the program and be everything to everone. It left me comfortable with the the basic skills and the knowledge that there are texts available with more depth on the various aspects of Photoshop. With that said, I am very satisfied with my purchase and recommed it with a 5 star rating.

This book is not very helpful to those who want to know why they are doing actions. Tool descriptions are next to non-existant. You are merely told what buttons to push and that is pretty much it.

I believe you are better off playing with photoshop than using this book. You will probably learn more.
