In her spare time she enjoys riding horses, arguing about free and open source software, and sleeping.
Luke Welling is a web architect at OmniTI and regularly speaks on open source and web development topics at conferences such as OSCON, ZendCon, MySQLUC, PHPCon, OSDC, and LinuxTag. When we set about writing this book, we aimed to write a book that we would like. We set out to write a book containing lots of realistic examples.
Most of the PHP books we purchased had some excellent chapters, but then devoted half of their length to a function reference. This book is nearly 900 pages long, and by not including another function reference, there was room for plenty of examples.
The book is divided into five parts. The first goes through basic language and programming concepts fairly quickly. We look at files, strings, arrays, regular expressions, code reuse and Object Oriented programming.
Part two deals with MySQL, we start with concepts, cover common queries and move on to advanced topics such as security and optimisation.
Part three deals with e-commerce and security. We look at threats, common ways of mitigating risk and how to implement security features using PHP. Topics include using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and authentication.
Part four is called Advanced PHP Techniques. It contains information on interacting with other parts of the server, or the network, dealing with date and time in various formats, generating images on the fly and using session control.
We think that the book’s greatest selling point are the project chapters in part five. Each of these covers one realistic application in detail, with complete source code and discussion of why it was written that way, what compromises where made, and suggestions on ways to modify or extend the applications. The projects are: a bookmark system to demonstrate automatically personalising a site to your user’s interests, a shopping cart, a content management system, a web based email service, a mailing list manager, a discussion forum, and a PDF document generation system.

When it arrived I bought it quickly. A great book that perhaps is a bit advanced for beginners - be careful if you are just starting out with MySQL and PHP - this book may not be quite for you.
The First two parts are a simple "crash course" for each technology. So you can step in the next chapters with the base.
What I liked most is that it comes with very practical examples, and also the source code comes in the CD. This way you do not need to type everything. Also it comes with the software needed to install on your PC and start learning PHP =).
If you want a PHP based web site and have just a bit of HTML knowledge then you’ll not get a better book then this to help you.
This book is not only written well, but is written in a manner that kept my short-spanned attention all the way through with plenty of momentum. Possibly the only computer book I have ever read all the way through.
Given the excellence of this book, I feel this is a huge oversight. The examples should contain only code related to content, not formatting. In the next edition, please remove the inline styles, move them to a stylesheet, and show us how to use php to dynamically create stylesheets!
For a beginner, this book has too many pages without examples. It just goes too deep. For me, I need a page of description and then an exercise to see how things work. There are sections of this book which go on forever without examples, and the writers say you can do things this way, or that way etc etc. This is just confusing and too dry to hold my attention.
I have quite a few PHP books, 90% of which I have regretted buying. Online tutorials are much better of you want to learn from scratch, you’ll pick up more techniques and develop a lot faster by doing these tutorials, most of which are free. One book that does stand out as being an excellent PHP book is ’PHP Solutions’ by David Powers. From start to finish this is just a great book. Clear, concise and just a few paragraphs of text before you start exercises. In the space of a couple of weeks I really felt like I had improved, and it reinforced much of what I had learnt from doing online tutorials. ’PHP Solutions’ is the best out there for PHP Development... Welling & Thompsons book falls way short in my opinion.
I have an object-oriented development background and wanted a book to get me started in PHP and MySQL for a large scale web site I am developing. I picked a copy of this book off the shelf in a bookshop in Cornwall got on the train and by the time I arrived in Suffolk I had devoured the first 200 or so pages.
I have found it to be an exceptionally useful book, clearly explaining many aspects of web development and how to implement them using the powerful combo of PHP & MySQL. I have already recommended it to three other people, who having no previous experience in the subject matter are starting to create useful work.
I would say that to a complete newbie it might be a second book but once you have a basic knowledge and understanding of web development and object-oriented development then this book will catapult yo to the next level and beyond.
And the codes need to be thoroughly tested.
The content is lean, compared to the volume of the book. I tried several other PHP tutorial books, but I have not yet found one which met my expectations. This is just my two cents.
The book is ideal for users of the Windows Operating System. It would be more complete if it would also address the interests of readers proficient in the LINUX (UNIX) operating system.
The included source code also offers alot of code examples.
It’s thoughtfully written, with many code examples and very well designed and explains everything you need to know in detail.
A fantastic learning aid and a great reference tool too. It includes a CD-ROM which contains all the code examples as well as a PDF of the entire book. It’s sometimes useful to have the PDF open on the side of the screen and learn by editing and creating code in your favourite code editor at the same time.
Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in learning PHP.
Note: It covers PHP 5 - and most hosting online is still running PHP 4 (as of June 06) - so you will have to adapt areas of your code quite considerably to run on the older version.
On the whole a good book with good example code - best used in tandom with online resources such as php.net
