Brilliant BookRating: 5

I have used many of Scott Kelby’s books and every one gets better and better.
Everything is so well explained that even a relative beginner to Photoshop would be able to achieve these effects. Although some of these effects can prove to be more difficult with a bit of care and careful reading they can eventually be done.
All the effects , both with pictures and various text projects are really brilliant.
The only warning is these effects become a bit addictive and you rarely feel happy with un-altered images any more.

This is not an in depth instruction manual for Photoshop CS. This does give the inexperienced user of Photoshop quick and easy tips for creating a variety of useful projects. Many of these projects will expose the new user to some of the powerful tools of Photoshop. If you want to learn all of the features of Photoshop then buy a more technical book or take a Photoshop course. So to get a start into the world of Photoshop this may be the book for you.

This book is great for Photoshop CS beginners. It’s packed with many tricks and techniques. You’ll be saying, "So that’s how they do that!" quite often. I have been able to take several techniques and use them and create variations for my own advertising.

Example photos are available on Kelby’s website for download. Unfortunately, they have a BRAND X stamp on them and their quality seems lower, but useful none-the-less.

I buy all of the "Tricks" books for Photoshop. They all have great ’secrets’ for achieving some really cool effects in a very short time. This book was no exception. Once you get one of the "Down and Dirty" books, you’ll want them all. No Photoshop artist should be without them. If you want to hang with the pros out there, you need to know every one of these tips in this book. I recommend the "Down and Dirty" series for everyone who owns Photoshop.

Think the author of this book is very known guy and he makes really cool stuff. And writes much books.

Don’t know if he thinks about all this "tips and tricks" himself, but for sure he have fantasy and imagination. Think it’s very important for every designer. Think book "Adobe Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks" will help many people to find inspiration in what they wanna do, doing.. or if they don’t know from where to begin.

In book you can find a lot of cool and good tricks. Some of them of cause just using some filters, other made with fantasy, third taken from some magazines, but book in common is really great.

Now it’s almost published his new book "Photoshop Down and Dirty Tricks" It it will be as good as this one, i definitely wanna have it.

Scott Kelby has put together a book of fun and useful digital imaging techniques in Adobe Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks. He gives step-by-step instructions for each of his tricks. As a nice bonus he gives many kayboard shortcuts to be used in Photoshop CS. This is a good book for someone wanting to jazz up some of their photos or who wants a easy intro to digital imaging.

This book has some great tricks, mostly for me it was more the steps to do the tricks which can be used in other designs. Its a good book to learn about different ways of doing things in photoshop.

Although this was written for CS and I’ve since upgraded to CS2 I still find the book extremely useful for those quick tips that can make a big difference to your image. Additionally "Down & Dirty" speeds up your production of projects as you get to learn about the new features that make Photoshop the number one product in its class.
I found it best to read through the articles before trying specific ones on your computer because the book is designed to improve your knowledge of Photoshop rather than teach you the basics. If you’re familiar with Photoshop this book will broaden your horizons considerably and give you the confidence to try things you’d never dreamed of doing before!

Here are some noteworthy tutorials perhaps you may find a use for, even though I did not: DVD mockup, Book mockup, Grudge Effect, Making a Photo Look Old. The best tutorials are by Felix Nelson, because they are original and unique. Scott Kelby’s stuff is kitsch. He copykats what graphic designer’s are doing today and recreates a cheap knock-off tutorial for this book. Best Buy, American Pie’s Logo, etc. Why the hell would I want to make a logo that looks just like American Pie’s logo? Or a logo that looks just like EA Sport’s logo? How trite. But if that’s your thing to steal, mimic, and make crappy versions of the original then go ahead. I used to respect Kelby, mmm not so much anymore. Anything for a buck and reproduce filler garbage for the masses. I pity anybody who uses this for commercial purposes or for anything that the public will see.

This book is not made for beginners or pros. It has detailed instructions to accomplish each technique presented. If you don’t know the command set available with Photoshop, it gives you enough that you can find it and use it.
Okay, but not for newbiesRating: 3

If you are new to Adobe Photoshop, this is not the best book for learning. It assumes that you know some basic procedures. Scott Kelby makes some pretty cheesie comments in several segments of the book, comments that are not only extraneous, but tax my patience. The book gives techniques for achieving various effects, some of which I don’t know if I want to achieve. It’s a good reference for someone who has experience with Photoshop and who wants to know how the latest special effects can be duplicated.
Great book but nothing for photographer not in ad field....Rating: 3

I have bought many, many books on Amazon and this is the first I am returning that was not received damaged. I am a photographer and could not find anything in this book to justify keeping it - there is simply nothing which applies to my personal photography interests. I think it should be titled Down and Dirty Tricks for the Graphics Designer.
That said, I like his style and his recipes are easy to apply and clearly demonstrated. If you are in a commercial advertising business, web design, etc, this would be a terrific book to own. For those simply interested in editing and improving your photos via Photoshop CS, this is not the book. I am going to try to read some of his other books and see if there is one that is applicable, as I certainly like his teaching style.
The best everRating: 5

This without a doubt has got to be one of the best, if not THE best PhotoShop CS "how to" book I have read to date. While I trust any book written by Scott Kelby to be top notch, this one surpassed expectations. Mr. Kelby’s style makes it very easy for anyone at any level of PhotoShop experience to learn his new "dirty tricks". Not only are the effects he teaches in this book very timely for the graphics world, each lesson contains methods that can be applied in a wide variety of ways, not only in the manner he has applied them. The sidebar tips on every page are alone worth the price of this book. I have great respect for Mr. Kelby’s work and like him, encourage PhotoShop users to take what they’ve learned and mess with it. The screenshots he uses in his book are very clear, the lessons are easy to follow and like many tutorial sites or other books, he doesn’t write with the assumption that everyone is an experienced PhotoShop user-he takes the time to explain every step so even the absolute beginner can follow the tutorials in the book. The fact that the reader can also access the book’s images online adds to its "user friendly" interface. The resources Mr. Kelby includes at the end of the book are a goldmine for further learning. I would definitely put this book on the list of "PhotoShop must-haves."
The "Dirty Trick" is hyping this ’Downer’; no work-along CDRating: 2

Worthwhile tutorials IF you are into type twisting, pixel bending or reality contortion, and IF you don’t need work-along images to follow the author’s steps. The title led me to expect an enhancement to Kelby’s other to-the-point Photoshop books. Rather, this appears to be more of a collection of Photoshop User magazine submissions. If you consider shortcuts ’L’ for lasso tool, ’M’ for marquee, and ’I’ for eyedropper as a revelation worth a half page sidebar, then you’d be far better served by one of the "Dummies for ..." books.

Regrettably, this dog-and-pony show of random techniques for digital contortionists - held together by the slim threads of glib verbiage and glossy pictures - is big on funny-talk but thin on substance. Some giveaways of publisher’s deadline page fillers are: 2 pages of kudos, and 5 pages of rambling "This is not an Introduction" (a ’pre-ramble’ perhaps?).

Unpardonable is this mentor’s cavalier attitude towards teaching materials; to label a student "pushy" if asking for work-along images to follow the tutorial steps seems incomprehensible. More on this: should you have the temerity to look for images, you are referred to the Brand-X website, not a mention there [a "mis-print ... sorry for the inconvenience"]. The Kelbybooks website has no link to image downloads; with persistence, you arrive at a gallery of highly-compressed tiny web-sized images (downloaded one-by-one), many marred by a disfiguring ’BrandX’ stamp. It’s like learning to do an appendectomy after reading an illustrated textbook.

Adobe offers this barnburner as a freebie with Photoshop purchase; don’t check that gift horse too closely in the mouth though. The production team certainly deserves credit for one of the two stars awarded here.

interesting, but not too relevent for most photographersRating: 3

I don’t mean to complain, but I was very disappointed by this book. first of all, it doens’t really "teach" you photoshop -- it provides recipes to do things so you can do them without learning. For example, he doesn’t tell you how to make a layer or where the command is, he just gives you the shortcut which is not helpful for a beginner trying to figure out HOW to do basic tasks and where you can find those taks in the menu bar. But then again, I guess this book isn’t for beginners. My other grips is that I read through all the tips, but then I realized that for me, a photographer mostly of my own family, I didn’t need ANY of these tips -- I’m not creating a magazine, a CD cover, etc.. -- just family pics. So, if you want a quick recipe for doing neat text things and effects, this is the book for you. If you want to LEARN how to use the program or fix your photographs in non-gimmicky ways, you should buy a different book. This book will be great for designers or those who want to see how to produce high tech effects, but for just photographers, it’s not the best.
